The Apple 2e was one of the series of Apple 2 computers that was the first generation of Apple products. The company produced Apple 2s from 1977 to 1993, an astoundingly long time given the changes in computing power over that time period.
The Apple 2 was one of the first mass market computers. Unlike previous computers, it was sold as a finished consumer product, with an attractive design.
The 2e model was released in 1983 with 64K base memory for $1395 ($4500 in 2026) For comparison, the original IBM PC cost $2500 at the time. Typical home computers had one or two 5 ¼” floppy drives and a TV for a monitor.
The 2e model was targeted at the home and educational market. It was a capable games machine for the time and there is a huge library of games written for it.
In addition to the home market, Apple was also strong in educational software. Many people’s first experience with computer was on an Apple 2e running Oregon Trail or Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego
