Nintendo Entertainment System

The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is a home video game console developed and marketed by Nintendo. It was released in the US on September 27, 1986. It was Nintendo's first programmable home console primarily competing with Sega's Master System in the third generation of video game consoles.

In Japan and North America, it quickly dominated and gave Nintendo a near-monopoly on the home console market. Unlike the previous market leader, Atari, Nintendo sought the support of third-party developers, such as Capcom, Hudson Soft, Konami, Namco, Enix, and Square. Originally priced at US$180 in 1986 (equivalent to $550 in 2026), Nintendo sold 61.91 million of the consoles.
