One of our founders, Alex Handy, recently got his hands on a habitat “Tech Transfer” document from 1988. It’s a fascinating read on the technical challenges and architecture of Habitat, the C64 proto-MMO that The MADE is restoring and bringing back online. I’ve included a download link and embedded the document below.
So what is this? It’s the document explaining how the server (and other parts) of Habitat worked when LucasArts transferred Habitat over to Fujitsu. As such, there is little held back in terms of architecture, although some of the finer details are left out.
There’s some crazy stuff in here, including early online weddings, diseases, and known and found exploits. I’m still pouring over it, it’s fascinating! Game design lessons start around page 157.
